BrewNZ Beer Awards August 2010

The Brewers Guild of New Zealand invites breweries from all over the world to enter their beers for New Zealand's premier beer competition: the BrewNZ Beer Awards.

The beers will be judged by a panel of experts, led by US-based judge David Logsdon.  The BrewNZ Beer Awards will be presented at a dinner, held on 26 August 2010 at the Duxton Hotel.  Tickets for the awards dinner are available soon.  If you would like to reserve a ticket, email your interest to Wendy Roigard.

There are 17 categories, offering Gold, Silver and Bronze medals, with a trophy for the best in class.  To be eligible to win a trophy your beer must be commercially available in New Zealand.  There is also a "Champion International Brewery" trophy which is available to all international entrants, regardless of whether or not their beers are available in New Zeasites/brewersguild.org.nz/land.

The deadline for entry and payment is:  31 July 2010.  Any entries that are not paid for by that date will not be judged.

Gold Medal:  A world class beer that accurately exemplifies the style, or may vary slightly from style parameters, while displaying the proper balance of taste, aroma and appearance.

Silver Medal:  An excellent beer that may vary from style parameters while maintaining close adherence to the style and displaying excellent taste, aroma and appearance.

Bronze Medal:  A fine example that may vary from style parameters and have minor deviations in taste, aroma or appearance.

Festive Brew

"Let's go Native" will be the catch-phrase for this year's festive brew, and the beer must include something uniquely Kiwi.  For example, even though kumara, feijoa, kiwifruit, etc were not here before mankind, they can still be considered unique and will be accepted.  If in doubt, contact the Head Steward whether your ingredient can be considered native.  There are no further style restrictions but the entry must contain complete brewers notes, giving a full description of the beer.  The beer will be judged on technical merit and creativity.

The beer (entry) must include an additional ingredient that is native or uniquely indigenous to New Zealand.  This could include a plant/flower, vegetable, fruit, animal (ie shellfish), herb, spice or wild yeast.  Any malt, hops, commercial yeast strain or water do not qualify as a native ingredient.

The entry does not have to have been commercially available prior to being entered, but will need to be available at Beervana.  The entry must be based on an existing beer style, which must be listed (excluding classes 5-9, 12 or 13).
