“In 1980 there were only 3 Craft Breweries in New Zealand. In 2011 there were over 50, trending much #craftbeer!”
Malt is our passion! Gladfield Malt was established in 2003 by Doug Michael, though in truth, the maltings was born out of a passion which started some years prior to this – the Michael family had grown prime quality malting barley in Canterbury for generations, and the idea of a maltings started for Doug when accompanying his father on delivery trips to the (long since gone) Canterbury Maltings plant in Heathcote – Christchurch.
Gladfield maltings is situated at Gladfield Farm in Canterbury, New Zealand, and the majority of barley used by the maltings is grown here. Not only does this make for spectacular surroundings to the maltings at certain times of year, but fantastic malt can't be made without fantastic barley and having control of this equally critical step gives us great advantage.
Mother nature lends us a hand too – Canterbury has long been renowned worldwide as having highly favourable growing conditions in which to grow malting barley. Our passion to make a great product and uncompromising approach to quality is a philosophy shared with and recognized by our customers and friends in the brewing industry.
Great beer starts here!
