Beervana 2012 Wrap Up
Records set at Beervana 2012. Beervana 2012 was a resounding success with more breweries represented, more beers on show, and more patrons tasting them than ever before.
Over the two event days at Wellington’s Westpac Stadium in August, 271 beers from 91 breweries were sampled by nearly 8,000 people who passed through the venue. Another important success measure is the number of first time attendees, says Festival Director David Cryer. Fifty-eight percent of people at Beervana were attending for the first time in 2012. All of us in the craft beer business want more people drinking great beer, and Beervana is a non-threatening, relaxed and fun way to dip your toe in,” he says.
The event’s success is not just about the numbers though. Festival Director David Cryer wants the event to offer an entry-point for people new to craft, but also provide new, unique and inspiring experiences for long-time craft lovers.
As New Zealanders have become increasingly passionate about craft beer we’ve found Beervana attracting a very diverse audience,” says Festival Director David Cryer. “We want to make sure the event gives every visitor an experience they value, and that they can’t get anywhere else.” Whether you want to sample as many rare and special brews as possible, discover the secrets of beer and food matching, or learn about the art of brewing, I want Beervana to deliver,” Cryer says.
High-attendance, especially among first-timers, is also partly due to the great media support the event received. We’re thrilled with the support we got from media this year. We’ve been working hard at building good relationships with a range of journalists, who are really the barometer for public sentiment, and we saw some great reportage come through before, during and after the event.” If you take their positivity about Beervana, and craft in general, as a measure of our potential, then I know we can work together to showcase craft and delight New Zealanders for a good many years to come,” Cryer says.
Beervana will be held in Wellington again in August 2013. Release: Steam Brewery Congratulates Tom
Press Release: Another Qualified Brewer at Steam
11 September 2012
The Institute of Brewing & Distilling, a UK based members organisation dedicated to the training and education of the international brewing community, has recently released the results of their globally recognised qualification exams.
Logistics Manager and Quality Controller Mr Tom Ashton was one of the successful candidates sitting exams this year and Steam Brewing Company would like to congratulate him for his well-deserved pass marks. Well done Tom for passing your final exam (Diploma Module 3 – Process and Packaging Technology) and completing your IBD Diploma in Brewing.
Tom is extremely pleased to have attained the qualification and looks forward to receiving the official ‘IBD Diploma in Brewing Tankard’. “There are not many people in NZ able to use the post-nominals 'Dipl. Brew' and they are all quite intelligent” says Sam Williamson (Dipl. Brew). “Congrats Tom” adds Shane Morley (M. Brew).
The team at Steam Brewing Company have now completed four General Certificates, three Brewing Diplomas and a Masters in Brewing between their (now) 7 full-time staff. This coupled with the company’s comprehensive list of accreditation (and beer-awards tally) has gained them a highly regarded reputation in the contract packaging industry.
Steam Brewing Company would also like to take this time to welcome Stewart Hickford to their team. He has a comprehensive knowledge of packaging and will be a valuable member of the team.
Steam Brewing Company is a custom beverage team empowered by their brewing expertise. Their Otahuhu facility is able to blend, brew, package and pasteurize a wide variety of cold beverages and pack sizes.
In Memory of Barry Newman
Barry Newman passed away Saturday 25th August. He died peacefully with his wife Leonie and his daughter Marina by his side.
Barry Newman
Barry was nominated for the Morton Coutts trophy at this year's Awards by Shane Morley (Steam Brewing). Here's his recollections of a true pioneer and legend of our industry.
Shakespeare Tavern Brewery
The brewery at the Shakespeare was set up in 1986. At that time the only breweries were Lion and DB; Macs in Nelson producing a range of beers; Jamie Jamison in Porirua operating a small brewery selling PET in the local market; and Stocken (sp?) in Henderson with a Robert Morten plant and packaging line. Newbegin were about to start up in Onehunga. Strongcroft in Petone followed later I think as did a brewpub in Tauranga.
Shakespeare was definitely innovative and ahead of it’s time. Overseas the first pub breweries had just started to appear in Australia with the Sail and Anchor in Freemantle in 1984 but there were few of them and most closed. The Shakespeare has continued to operate to this day.
The Shakespeare was owned by Peter Barraclough, who put in the brewery to create a point of difference for the pub. He was a loyal DB customer and continued to keep DB on tap and drink it himself.
Barry Newman was recruited as the Brewer after the first brewer (also called Barry) quit before the brewery was completed. I think Malcolm Cheadle, the architect on the pub refit, recommended Barry for the job. Barry had previously been ‘sly grogging’ (to use his term), brewing and selling beer without a licence.
The Shakes differentiated itself from many who would come later and attempt to compete on price. An early T-shirt had the slogan ‘twice the price but thrice as nice’. I don’t know if the selling price was twice that of DB but they certainly were out to produce beers that stood out. The only exception was possible the rather mainstream Barraclough lager, the only beer without a Shakespearean name.
The beers were an innovation in the NZ market at that time. Barry started making complex, hoppy bitter beers. There was nothing on the market like King Lear when he released it.
Barry also experimented with some unusual ingredients. His chestnut beer was a standout, with fruity aromatic characters reminiscent of aroma hops from the nuts.
Barry also travelled to Japan and Vanuatu to assist with startup of brewpubs using the same equipment as the Shakespeare.
Barry and the Shakespeare were an important part of the growth of craft brewing in NZ, most if not all aspiring brewery startups would have visited the Shakespeare.
Barry made a huge contribution to the industry we admire today.
We honour his memory and our thoughts are with his family in this difficult time.
Thanks to NZBrewer's Flickr stream for the photo of Barry and Michael Jackson in 1999.

A Moment With Te Radar
With the Awards night a mere day away we took a moment to get a few choice words from the evening's MC, Te Radar, on beer and hosting...
I have tried in the past to make my own beer. I have discovered that it is most assuredly not my forte.
Fortunately there are others far better equipped and qualified to brew beer than I, and for this I am eternally thankful.
They are currently producing some of the best beer I have ever had the pleasure of supping, and it is a constant source of delight to see and savour their skills as often as I can.
I once overheard a man in a bottlestore near Tauranga proclaim that “My grandfather drank (a particular mass produced beer that shall remain unnamed), My father drank it, and I drink it. It’s all they drank, and it’s all I drink”.
It was without doubt, one of the saddest things I have ever heard.
May we never be that man.
Brewers Guild of New Zealand Market Survey Results Released
Brewers Guild of New Zealand Market Survey Results Released
For Immediate Release
2.08.2012
15 days out from New Zealand's most prestigious beer awards, the results from The Brewers Guild Of New Zealand's latest industry wide survey are available, covering the period from January 2008 to December 2011.
Conducted by Market Research, the survey is anonymous and all breweries in the country are asked to participate to paint a revealing and accurate picture of the brewing industry.
The major trend is the tremendous take up in the numbers of small "craft" breweries and its flow on effects in the brewing landscape.
The total number of breweries in New Zealand has increased by 42% over the four year period of the survey from 48 in 2008 to 68 by the end of 2011. The number of small "craft" breweries (those under 40,000 litres per annum) has grown the most, doubling from 15 to 30 over that time.
Small to medium sized breweries (40,000 to 100,000 litres per annum) have seen the most consistent increase in production over the period, their output growing by an average of 7% in each six month period.
Notably, the total craft beer market grew by 14% in the last 6 month period of the survey (June - Dec 2011). Production of craft beer has increased by an average of 3% per annum over the past 3 years.
New Zealand beer is also travelling abroad. 42% of those surveyed are currently exporting and a further 32% expect to in the next 2 years. Of all those surveyed, 87% expect their production to increase during 2012.
President of the Brewers Guild Ralph Bungard (Three Boys Brewery) says the Guild considers that the survey accurately reflect the feeling amongst brewers that there is a real change happening in the structure of the New Zealand beer industry.
"Certainly the increased number of small brewers and the volume of the beer that they are producing suggest that the public are changing their drinking habits. There is an explosion of beer flavours and styles available to consumers, and that means more of the public are finding a beer that suits their taste and lifestyle."
"It is very encouraging to see the growth and diversification in the industry and it is a good sign that most brewers consider that they will grow in size and look to be exporting in the next year. These are exciting times for brewers and consumers."
David Cryer, organiser of New Zealand's largest Beer Festival Beervana (August 17 - 18) says the growth in visitors to Beervana demonstrates the growing interest in craft beer. "There's no longer a typical craft beer consumer. We welcome a really broad range of people to Beervana - women, men, couples, friends, the afterwork crowd, foodies, and long time craft advocates - which tells us that across the board New Zealanders are beginning to demand more from their beer drinking experience. With 271 brews on show this year from 96 breweries, we know there will be something for everyone."
Craig Bowen, owner of the country's leading craft beer distributor BeerNZ, agrees with the trends. "I'm seeing growth across the country and in both on and off premise customers. In addition to these new customers, our existing loyal customers are also seeing sales increase and are continually looking for the latest and best beers to satisfy this demand."
For all media enquiries and detailed survey results please contact: media@brewersguild.org.nz
Footnote:
All breweries in New Zealand were invited to partake in the survey.
Macs Brewery figures exclude Macs Gold and Monteiths Brewery figures exclude Monteiths Original.

SUTTON GROUP ANNOUNCED AS NAMING SPONSORS OF THE BREWERS GUILD OF NEW ZEALAND AWARDS
Press Release for Immediate Distribution
As we move into a flurry of activity for the Brewer's Guild of New Zealand Awards, the Guild is happy to announce the return of the Sutton Group as naming-rights sponsor again in 2012.
“Sutton Group is proud to be closely associated with the brewing industry, so we see sponsoring the awards as a perfect fit. We are delighted to return as naming sponsors again in 2012”, says Brent Sutton, Managing Director of Sutton Group.
President of the Guild, Ralph Bungard (Three Boys Brewery) agrees; "A key mission of the Brewer’s Guild is celebrating the craft of brewing and our annual awards are central to that mission through the recognition of excellence. Pairing again with Sutton is a fantastic result for the Guild."
Taking place on Thursday August 16 in Wellington, the Awards are announced at a black tie dinner evening and will be presented by Te Radar. The Awards are the pinnacle of achievements in New Zealand brewing, and last year saw a record number of entries from across the country and overseas.
With the proliferation of exciting new breweries arriving on the scene, and a uniformly high quality of brewing from established figures, the Guild expects the Awards to challenge the judging panel to the fullest.

Press Release: Moa beer marks medal haul milestone

Press Release: Moa Beer

Moa beer marks medal haul milestone
Kiwi craft brewery records top medal count at the Asia Beer Awards
For the second year running Moa beer has chalked up the biggest medal haul of any brewery at the Asia Beer Awards.
Hot on the heels of a stellar effort at the Australian Beer Awards, the Blenheim brewery picked up seven medals – one gold, two silver and four bronze – to beat out over one hundred other breweries from around the world.
In a nod to the growing momentum of Kiwi craft beer, Moa general manager Gareth Hughes was invited to judge 18 styles of beer. Tough job...
“It’s always a tough competition with incredibly talented brewers and industry folk from all over Asia Pacific and the rest of the World. It feels great to have come away with another big win but personally I’m really honoured to be counted amongst some genuine good bastards,” says Hughes.
The Moa beer medal haul includes:
Gold medal

Moa Imperial Pilsner (Special Reserve) - World, Strong Ale/Lager

Silver medal

Moa St Josephs – World, Belgian Blonde Ale

Moa Breakfast – World, Flavoured Beer

Bronze medal

Moa Blanc – World, Krystal Weiss

Moa Pale Ale – World, Pale Ale

Moa Five Hop – World, India Pale Ale

Weka Pear Cider – World, (non-apple) Cider
“We’re especially proud of the two bronzes for the Blanc and Pale Ale as we were up against some tough competition from US craft juggernauts Rouges and Lagunitas. The Blanc win also completed the medal count for our full set of beers – a clean sweep for the team.
“We’re also rapt to have some New Zealand company on the podium. Yeastie Boys was awarded the Champion Brew trophy for Pot Kettle Black, Tuatara grabbed a couple of bronze medals and Green Man secured a gold,” Hughes says.

About Moa Beer

Moa Beer is brewed with fresh locally produced hops and without adjuncts such as rice, sugar or corn. It’s made the way beer used to be made, before everyone started making it differently. Fastidiously handcrafted in the traditional method and rounded off through the use of winemaking techniques, including barrel ageing and bottle fermentation and conditioning (like they do with Champagne). Because making (and drinking) the same thing every day becomes boring, Moa comes in 10 varieties: The Estate range: Moa Methode, Moa Blanc, Moa Noir, Moa Pale Ale; the Reserve range: Moa Imperial Stout, Moa St Josephs, Moa Blanc Evolution, Moa Five Hop and Moa Breakfast; and Moa Original. Moa also comes in a variety of different sizes: from 330ml, through 375ml and 750ml, up to 1.5L magnums and 3L jeroboams to make you look extra-cool at parties.
Media Release: Entries open for Black Rock Home Brew Competition
MEDIA RELEASE
18 June 2012
Home Brewing celebrated at Beervana 2012
Entries open for Black Rock Home Brew Competition
Beervana and Black Rock announced today the inaugural Black Rock Home Brew Competition to be held at Beervana 2012.
The Competition is a chance for aspiring brewers to have their brews judged by Black Rock Master Brewer Kirsten Taylor, Taranaki brewing guru Joseph Wood from Liberty Brewing, and beer aficionados and home-brew advocates Simon Morton and Richard Scott from Radio New Zealand's 'This Way Up' programme.
“We constantly get emails from passionate home brewers wanting to show off their wares at Beervana,” explains Festival Director David Cryer. “This year, with Black Rock’s help, we can offer home brewers a chance to demonstrate their skill at the event.”
Black Rock Master Brewer Kirsten Taylor believes supporting home brewers is critical to grow a vibrant beer industry. “Home brewers are experimental by nature. Their quest for knowledge, to understand what makes good beer, often leads to brilliant results as they manipulate hops, malt and technique.”
“For producers like us, what home brewers do with our products is really inspiring. I’m expecting to see lots of innovation in the competition entries!”
She also believes that brewing for competition is often the catalyst for home brewers to become professional.
“Competitions encourage home brewers to look at what’s currently available and what styles or brands they might aspire to be able to brew like. It makes them focus on the consumer.
“Competition also often helps brewers break through barriers in the standard of their brews, as they pay more attention to sanitation and other aspects of the brewing process. And of course the feedback gained from competition is invaluable too,” says Taylor.
Ten finalists will be chosen, including two runners-up and an overall winner. The finalists and winners will be announced at 9pm on Friday 17 August at Beervana Session 2. Every entrant will have an opportunity to talk to the judges after the winners are announced.
The winner will take home a GA double-pass to Beervana 2013, three 6-pack cases of malt extract of their choice from Black Rock, $200 voucher for Martin Bosley's restaurant, and a year subscription to Dish magazine. The runners-up will win a GA double-pass to Beervana 2013 and one 6-pack case of malt extract of their choice from Black Rock.

New Zealand brewing company Yeastie Boys capped off a whirlwind award-winning month when their flagship porter - Pot Kettle Black - headed off more than 350 beers to be crowned Champion Beer at the Asia Beer Awards in Singapore last weekend.
Pot Kettle Black, Yeastie Boys' fastest-selling beer, was awarded a gold medal and named champion Porter in the early rounds of the competition.
A second round of judging, which reviewed the top 10 point scoring beers of the entire event, resulted in the New Zealand beer being name Champion Beer of Festival.
"The results are certainly a who's who of breweries around the world, from the very biggest through to some of the smallest and most exciting ones" stated Yeastie Boys' Creative Director Stu McKinlay.
"We may well have been the smallest brewery in the competition, by volume produced, and were thrilled to pick up a gold medal. To take out the champion beer of the show, when you're up against breweries that are essentially your brewing heroes, is simply staggering. It's still quite hard to believe."
Category winners came from the traditional brewing powerhouses of Belgium, Germany, England and United States of America but also featured lesser-known brewing nations such as Belarus and New Zealand.
The win, arguably the biggest international award picked up by a New Zealand brewery in recent years, comes hot on the heels of another big victory for Yeastie Boys.
Their Earl Grey infused Gunnamatta, a 'Tea-leafed' India Pale Ale, picked up the top gong at Melbourne's Great Australasian Beer SpecTAPular in May. Gunnamatta pipped 60 experimental beers, from 60 of the hottest breweries in Australia and New Zealand, to win the People's Choice award.
"These sorts of things always have the potential to open some pretty interesting doors for a small company with no sales team or marketing budget" said McKinlay. "Winning a couple of huge awards like this with such vastly different beers, and in close succession, proves yet again that we're anything but a one trick pony. It gives interested buyers the best possible indication that our beers are both pleasing to the general public and deemed technically perfect by the experts."
Yeastie Boys' Directive Creator, Sam Possenniskie, said the recent wins have come at the ideal time for the small company. "We've been around since 2008 and have an excellent track record in regards to winning awards but, having grown by more than 300% in the last year, we're only just making that giant leap from hobby business to what we'd consider a real business. These sorts of things are the perfect indication that we're maintaining that ideal balance between the growth of our business and the quality of our product." Possenniskie went on to praise the brewing team at Invercargill Brewery, where Yeastie Boys' production takes place: "Steve Nally and his team at Invercargill are doing an amazing job for us. We're pushing them in regards to volume, and the creative use of their brewery, but they just keep on coming up trumps. It's becoming a partnership not unlike Hadlee and Chatfield in the 1980s. We may be seen to be taking all the metaphorical wickets at one end but we couldn't do it without the consistency of the team at Invercargill."
The Yeastie Boys, who both still hold down unrelated day jobs, are certainly making some noise.
Pot Kettle Black is available through Yeastie Boys' distributors BeerNZ Ltd (New Zealand), Innspire Pty Ltd (Australia), Shelton Brothers (USA), Impex Beer (Europe) and Beer Bach (Singapore).

Press Release – Croucher Brewing Company

In the largest annual beer competition in the world, Rotorua’s own Croucher Brewing Pilsner has just scooped the pool.
At the Australian International Beer Awards Croucher Pilsner won GOLD and TROPHY for BEST PILSNER. Croucher Pale Ale also had success picking up a silver medal.
This is the latest in a string of accolades for the local brewers having won the title of New Zealand Beer Cup Champion in 2011, Champion International Lager and Champion New Zealand beer in 2010. Nigel Gregory from Croucher Brewing was hopeful that their beers would stand up well at the Australian Awards given their recent track record in NZ, “We’ve started to build some momentum with each of our range winning major awards over the last few years, and it is unbelievably satisfying after a lot of hard graft”.
While Croucher Brewing’s beers have long attracted critical acclaim from such wine critics as Bob Campbell MW, it has only recently gained recognition in the International Brewing Community. Part of the reason for this is an increased understanding and respect for New Zealand styled craft beers. Paul Croucher, brewer, said “We’ve been pushing New Zealand hops into otherwise classic styles of beer and in the past the Judges have complained our Pilsner wasn’t Czech enough and our Pale Ale wasn’t English enough. Now, new categories have evolved and Judges are happy to embrace the new styles coming out of New Zealand of which we like to think we are pioneers.”
While Croucher Brewing only began its push into the Australian market in late 2010, Australia already rivals New Zealand as the top market for its beer. “Australian’s are becoming beer savvy very quickly and despite their excruciatingly high excise tax there are still enough Aussies prepared to pay for something special.”
Sales of craft beer in New Zealand are also growing strongly, and that is against a backdrop of falling sales for mainstream beers. Mr Gregory said, “New Zealand produces many world class craft beers. It is a particularly exciting and dynamic segment of the liquor industry. We urge Kiwi’s to get out and support the craft brewers in their region, and discover the wonderful flavours of craft beer.”
The Croucher Brewing Company is owned by Nigel Gregory and Paul Croucher. It is a craft beer brewery established in 2004 and specialises in making beers that are delicious – not alcoholic soft drinks! Croucher Brewing won the Rotorua’s Emerging Business Of The Year in 2007 and since then has grown into one of New Zealand’s premier craft breweries exporting to Australia and Singapore. In 2011, Croucher Brewing opened BREW | Craft Beer Pub, its own retail pub focused on great New Zealand craft beer and beer inspired food.

Press Release: Yeastie Boys To Release Champion Beer
Yeastie Boys to release champion tea beer
Press Release
Yeastie Boys, 6 June 2012
For immediate use
Wellington's Yeastie Boys' this week announced the nationwide release of their trophy winning "Gunnamatta" India Pale Ale. The beer, which beat out 60 other breweries to be crowned "People's Choice" at Melbourne's Great Australasian Beer SpecTAPular last month, is a "tea-leafed" India Pale Ale that has taken Australasia by storm over the last few weeks.
The creation of this unique beer, which uses Earl Grey Blue flower tea instead of hops, saw the Yeastie Boys work through a variety of potential teas and tisanes with Wellington based tea company t Leaf T before picking the particular blend that Gunnamatta uses. Yeastie Boys Creative Director, Stu McKinlay, explains: "We went into developing Gunnamatta with quite a fixed idea, based around finding one of the robust single estate teas that we'd read about in the extensive menu, but the team at t Leaf T totally blew our mind with the options available. We ended up choosing Earl Grey Blue Flower for its pungent perfume of citrus and floral notes, knowing immediately that this would work brilliantly in the type of base beer we had in mind."
"In many ways, it takes the celebration of the development of India Pale Ale one step further than normal" said Yeastie Boys' Directive Creator, Sam Possenniskie. "This kind of ale was shipped from England to India and, once emptied, those ships were filled with tea for the return journey. This beer also goes both ways." However, McKinlay has a different take on the beer. "Sam sure does come up with some interesting intellectual text but, to get directly to the truth of the matter, I just got fed up with chocolate and coffee beers being the trend du jour and thought it was time to put tea into the limelight. I grew up in a tea drinking family, so it has always been my hot drink of choice. We had tea with breakfast, morning tea, brunch, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, supper and before bed. We'd even slip a few in between just for tea's sake. It was part tradition, part theatre - just like this beer is for us now!"
The Gunnamatta name, like many of Yeastie Boys creations, has caused some intrigue. McKinlay elaborates: "It's a beach break on the southern coast of Victoria's Mornington Peninsula and it inspired a Paul Kelly song of the same name on his 2004 album Ways and Means. As the beer was initially developed for an Australian based beer festival, we wanted it to be inspired by Australian music in some way. We took some wild conceptual rides before Gunnamatta's surf rock left us with a vision of surfing, good friends, a few beers and lots of cups of tea. Using tea in a beer was one of hundreds of ideas gestating in Stu's head, so the music just induced a pre-existing idea." The Yeastie Boys asked Paul Kelly if it was okay to mention his name in beer's story on the label and Kelly generously replied with the okay and a nice touch of editing. "As a long time fan, that was probably more exciting than wining the People's Choice," gushed an exuberant McKinlay "we've promised to send him some beer when it hits Australia's shores."
Despite numerous requests, from beer geeks and knitting groups, there are currently no plans to add the beer to Yeastie Boys' leftfield regular range. As Sam Possenniskie explains "We're quite sure it's popularity is linked to the transit of Venus. We'll brew enough to last us through to spring and then we'll think about releasing it again in 2117."
Gunnamatta will be available nationwide from 11th June, for several months, through Yeastie Boys' distributor BeerNZ Ltd. It will be available in Australia from early July through Innspire Pty Ltd.
The Yeastie Boys already have plans for the beer that will win them the People's Choice at the Great Australasian Beer SpecTAPular in 2013.
Gunnamatta technical information:
Malt: Golden Promise Pale Malt, Carapils, Caramunich, Wheat
Hops: Pacifica, Motueka, Southern Cross, Pacific Jade

Yeast: “Chico” (US ale)
Alcohol: 6.5%abv
Bitterness: 52ibu
About Yeastie Boys:
Yeastie Boys is a multiple award-winning Wellington based meta-brewery having more fun than everyone else. The brainchild of Stu McKinlay and Sam Possenniskie - two of New Zealand's leading beer activists - the brewery has been picking up trophies and receiving critical acclaim since 2008. The only brewery to ever win two trophies for a single beer at the Brewers Guild of New Zealand beer awards (for their flagship Pot Kettle Black), they are also one of the few breweries to regularly receive hate mail (for their infamous Rex Attitude). They're pleased to report they occasionally receive love letters too! Yeastie Boys occasionally use Comic Sans in their press releases, just because everyone else hates it so much.

The Great Kiwi Beer Festival Raises Hops & Enjoyment in Christchurch
Over ten thousand people from Canterbury and around New Zealand, attended the Great Kiwi Beer Festival in the sun at Hagley Parkon the Saturday the 25th February, for what some said was the biggest beer festival in New Zealand.
Team Event director Callam Mitchell, who is part of the group that runs and owns the festival, said he was thrilled with the response.
More than 100 different beers from 40 brewers, as well as a few ciders and wines, were on offer at the festival. The event was focused on savouring craft beers rather than consuming vast quantities, with beer appreciation and food-matching seminars also provided.
The live music entertainment will include The Black Seeds, AHoriBuzz, The Nudge, The Unfaithful Ways and DJ's Nacoa and Seth Hamilton.
"The vibe and the atmosphere was really positive, and there was a great mix of people too."said Team Event director Callam Mitchell, who is part of the group that runs and owns the festival.
Mitchell said the crowd was well-behaved, with only three evictions and one arrest during the eight-hour event.
Some attendees had flown down from Auckland and Wellington for the festival, while beer writers from the United States and Australia were also present.
"There was some real genuine interest in beer appreciation ... there was a lot of dialogue going on with the brewers from people who were really interested about beer, " Mitchell said, and we couldn't agree more!

Yeastie Boys Create the Worlds First Known Whisky Beer
From Stuff.co.nz comes a great write up on the Yeastie Boys latest effort, the much anticpated and debated Rex Attitude. They say is the world's first "whisky-beer", a golden ale made from 100 per cent peat-smoked, Scottish distilling malt.
Here's to the world's first known whisky-beer
Michelle Duff
It's said to taste like bacon, smoked kippers or medicine – so if you don't savour the world's first known whisky-beer, you'll definitely be spitting it out.
Wellington brewers Yeastie Boys have developed what they say is the world's first "whisky-beer", a golden ale made from 100 per cent peat-smoked, Scottish distilling malt.
"We thought we'd have a crack at it, and when we tasted it I knew we were going to have a winner," brewer Stu McKinlay said. "I didn't really think it would result in that – I thought it would be so intense it would be undrinkable."
Since then he and business partner Sam Possenniskie have heard the taste compared to bacon, medicine, coal tar and smoked kippers, and admit "Rex Attitude" won't be for everyone.
