Trainee Brewer

Sawmill is an independent, New Zealand owned brewery run by a small and hardworking team. We are continuing our expansion in the growing Craft Beer market and are looking for another team member to join our growing production team.

Our production team is a high performance, quality driven team working hard to get the best quality beer to the people. We are seeking a hard working and detail driven trainee brewer, bringing skills and leadership to ensure we continue producing quality beer to meet customer demand.

Overview

The Trainee Brewer is responsible to the Sawmill Brewery Production Manager to:

  • Operate, with assistance, the brewhouse to produce the required wort at the required quality and quantity as per the recipe.
  • Learning and completing all cellaring tasks, including cleaning tanks, yeast handling, centrifuging and fermentation checks are completed as assigned by the Lead Brewer to the highest standard of quality and accuracy.
  • Maintaining health & safety, food safety and quality standards in fermenting products ensuring consumers receive the best beer possible.
  • Be a member of the sensory team to help analyse beer throughout the brewing process and post packaging.
  • Keeping accurate records of production metrics to help drive efficiencies in the brewery.
  • Reporting and monitoring machine condition, assisting in maintaining machines based on OEM maintenance practices.

Specifically, a Trainee Brewer will:

1. Be a champion for Sawmill’s high quality standards.

  • Ensure that production activities support and adhere to the Sawmill brand values.
  • Have an eye for detail with a focus on ensuring all beer that goes through the brewery is in the best possible condition.
  • Actively seek out quality improvements and enable an environment where improvement opportunities are encouraged.
  • Act quickly and decisively when quality issues arise to minimise the effect of any issues.
  • Ensure all work areas are kept to the highest standard of cleanliness.

2. Actively strive to achieve and exceed productivity targets and environmental management goals.

  • Ensure all steps are taken to ensure daily production targets are met.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and management on breakdowns or events that have the potential to cause a missed target.
  • Identify and assist with rectifying machine breakdowns if they occur.
  • Actively work to reduce the waste to landfill and work to maximise the amount of waste that is recycled.
  • Work to help to reduce the environmental impact of the actions within the brewery.
  • Contribute to optimising our resource utilisation through the conservation of water, energy and emissions.

Essential Skills, Abilities and Experience

  • Highly detail orientated.
  • Excellent multi-tasking abilities.
  • At least General Certificate of Brewing level of education or equivalent or 12 months experience working in a brewery or winery.
  • Good hands on mechanical skills.
  • Competent numerical, literary and computer skills.
  • A level of physical fitness to be able to perform all tasks over a full working day and week.
  • Decisive decision making and communication.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with problem solving in both a structured and spontaneous environment.
  • An understanding of the workings of a production operation.
  • Ability to work with a level of independence.
  • Forklift operation licence.
  • Beer sensory training.
