Gladfield Malt purchases Malteurop

Doug and Gabi Michael, owners of Gladfield Malt Ltd, have announced the purchase of the former Malteurop site at 8 Glassworks Road, Ashburton, securing an important grain handling asset for New Zealand growers, brewers, staff, and the wider Canterbury community.

The acquisition strengthens Gladfield Malt’s long-standing commitment to locally grown grain and New Zealand-made malt, while helping maintain a vital link between Canterbury arable growers and the brewing industry.

Gladfield Malt is proud to continue supporting both the New Zealand arable industry and the New Zealand brewing industry. The purchase will help provide confidence for brewers who value high-quality malt made from locally grown barley.

After 18 years in New Zealand, the French farmer-owned multinational behind Malteurop is exiting the local market, reflecting the challenges of operating in a small and competitive industry.

Gladfield Malt is a local, family-owned business with five generations of farming roots in Canterbury and a long history of growing malting barley and producing high-quality malt in the heart of New Zealand’s grain-growing region.

Doug and Gabi Michael said the purchase was about backing New Zealand-grown grain, supporting the brewing industry, and protecting a site with real history.

“We understand that longevity in business comes from hard work, passion, resilience, and the support of the people around you. We are grateful to our customers, suppliers, growers, service providers, and wider community for their continued loyalty and support.”

Gladfield Malt is also pleased to confirm that all staff currently employed at the Ashburton site will retain their roles and become part of the Gladfield team.

The company intends to restore the heritage buildings on the Ashburton site, creating a lasting asset for the region and giving back to the local community.
